Mumbai- the eastern New York and home to more than 13 million people as per the latest survey of 2001, was previously known as Bombay. Mumbai ports have control over half of India’s sea traffic. It is the commercial and financial capital of India, not to forget the entertainment hub too.
Home to leading brands and big names:
Mumbai has the headquarters of RBI- the regulatory independent body that controls the monetary transactions of India, Bollywood- the Indian film industry, NSE- National Stock Exchange of India and BSE (Bombay Stock Exchange) - Asia’s first stock exchange and the one institution which has been attracting foreign investors by its steady growth, especially over the last 18-24 months. It almost came as a surprise to people that when 9/11 happened and world over the economy was falling and stock exchanges were crashing, the BSE was relatively steady. It is not the financial capital of India for nothing; 40% of national income tax comes from this city, it has 70% of capital transactions, 25% of maritime income and the per- capita income of Mumbai is Rs.48, 954, which is 3 times that of India’s national per-capita income. Here we can find the headquarters of BCCI- Board of Control for Cricket in India. Mumbai has given us superb players like Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar.bizing to Bollywood-the faceof Indian film industry; which makes the highest number of movies per year. It is the source of bread and butter to a lot of people.Mumbai has the largest SEZs of India- an area of 50 square kilometers. It also has the famous Bhabha Atomic Research Center.
Mumbai lifeline- the train service and the Dabbawalas:
The world’s largest employer- Indian railways is rightly represented by the Mumbai public transport system which is the lifeline of Mumbai and its people. It is currently running a strong 303 kilometers per day with a proposed 153 kilometers of metro service, the work for which shall soon begin. Is has registered its
place as the highest commuters using it per day: a whopping 6.1 million, which is far more than what was expected of it. It has three lines and keeping in mind the shape of Mumbai, the busiest traffic is on the southern route of Mumbai.
Another subject of study in almost every MBA institute, including the IIMs, is the Dabbawalas which have the students running for course study materials on them and going for their tactics to deliver tiffin boxes in record time to entire Mumbai- in ‘all’ seasons. The 125 year old industry has now more than 5000 employees who carry 175,000 to 200,000 thousand tiffin boxes each day, with a six sigma rating; a recent survey indicated that out of 16,000,000 tiffin boxes, only one box got delayed, which is a whopping 99.9999999 accurate- more than any industry across the world. Britain’s Prince Charles had visited them over his stay in India.
The Governance in Mumbai: BMC and Mumbai Polic:
BMC is the richest Municipal Corporation of India. BMC was earlier known as Bombay Municipal Corporation, now it is Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation; run by an IAS officer- the Municipal Commissioner. Likewise, Mumbai Police is run by the Police Commissioner. It has the famous Crime Branch Mumbai which
was once said to be second only to Scotland Yard. We have Bombay High Court here which not only has Mumbai under its jurisdiction, but also covers Union Territories of Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and some parts of Maharshtra and Goa. The average rate of literacy here is 86%, which is higher than the national rate, by any standards.
The tourist destinations in Mumbai:
Mumbai- the city of beaches has various places to visit that it can offer to its visitors- namely the Chowpaty( Chowpati) beach, The Prince of Wales Museum, The Gateway of India, The Chhatrpati Shivaji Terminus( formerly the Victoria Terminus),
the Elephanta caves and not to forget
the religious placeslike- Siddhivinayak .
emple and Haji Ali Dargah
The not-so-presentable-part:
As they say, life is not a bed of roses; the same stands for Mumbai as well. Nobody can forget the serial blasts of Mumbai of 13th March ’93 and the floods of 26th July ’05. Though the latter was not in our hands, but the former was definitely something each one of us would like to forget, including non-mumbai-ites.
Famous people from Mumbai:
Though it has the business giants like Reliance, Tata, Godrej and 4 other fortune 500 companies, it has to its credit people who have made a huge impact on society in their own fields, like the Ambani Group- one of the leaders of this group,Mr. Mukesh Ambani had once become the richest person of the world, and together with his
brother’s assets, they form the biggest business house of the world. Then there is the legendary Mr. Amitabh Bachchan, who by his creative abilities in the line of cinema has taken the Indian cinema to the world level and the other names in the same field are Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Then it comes to another area which sees entire India stand up for it- cricket. Mumbai has produced cricket legends like Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar; the latter still playing and breaking almost all the records of the game and setting newer and higher standards. The ‘Time’ magazine had once quoted that Sachin Tendulkar was once more popular than Andre Agassi, David Bekham and Tiger Woods. Though some of these people might not have been born in Mumbai, but they have made contribution to the society by making Mumbai as their home.
